Using Local Names in Firefox

Instructions for using LocalNames in [WWW] a Firefox web browser.

  1. Go to [WWW] the redirection server, and bind some key word to the URL of a LocalNames space.

  2. Test it out.

  3. Create a firefox bookmark:

    1. Select menu item Bookmarks | Manage Bookmarks

    2. Click the button New Bookmark

    3. Fill out the form as follows:

    name

    LocalNames Lookup

    location

    [WWW] http://localnames.taoriver.net/onebigsoup/%s

    keyword

    ln

    description

    Type "ln <term>" in the addressbar to perform a localnames lookup

Press "OK", close the bookmark manager.

Type "ln UsingLocalNamesInFirefox" in the address bar, and see it in action. :)

Or you could try "ln RecentChanges" or "ln CommunityWiki/RecentChanges" or "ln LionKimbro/Manna" or even just "ln Manna" or "ln PirsBlog" or "ln cgi" or whatever.

Once you get used to it, you'll want to make your own LocalNames description..!

Just copy and paste this into a file, put it somewhere on the Internet (or on this very wiki,) and start with it:

  http://purl.net/net/localnames/

  NamesTable
    Blah http://onebigsoup.wiki.taoriver.net/moin.cgi/Blah
    Foo http://intcomm.wiki.taoriver.net/moin.cgi/Foo

...just build up a list of entries, and then you can make use of it immediately!

Read LocalNamesBasics or LocalNamesFormat to learn how to connect with other name spaces, and to learn how to default to other namespaces. (Super-Powerful!)

XML-RPC in Firefox

Warning this is not so useful

It uses the [WWW] http://services.taoriver.net:9090/ proxy with [WWW] http://onebigsoup.wiki.taoriver.net/moin.cgi/CommunityWikiLocalNamesDescription?action=raw url

1. First get the latest version of the XML-RPC Javascript component, as updated by the Mozblog team:

* [WWW] http://mozblog.mozdev.org/nsXmlRpcClient.js

2. Stored it under [firebird_install_dir]/components/

3. Save the page at the following url on you disk

* [WWW] http://www.ellh.com/test.html

4. Load the page, you will get an alert box with the url found for SlashDot.

5 on:

* [WWW] http://www.ellh.com/test2.html

You will find a page with a bookmarklet, ie a small JavaScript code invoked when you use the bookmark

6. You can bookmark this url and then assign a keyword just as described above or click on it to have a prompt to enter a name BUT it will only work if the current page is a local Url ie [WWW] file:///C:/apage.html. The bookmarklet is executed as if it were on the current page, so if the current page is not local, security features will be on and the script wont be able to use xml-rpc...

I don't know If I will go further but anyway maybe someone might find this stuff useful....... -- PierreGaston

Thank you, Pierre!
